The visual summary: city-by-city results and the case studies, in about ten minutes.
What we found, across 40,685 buildings in New York, Boston, Cambridge, Seattle, Denver and Washington, DC:
- The fines are large. If owners do nothing, the present value of BPS fines is $37.4 billion. One building in seven stands to lose more than 5% of its value.
- Most of the exposure is still ahead. 62% of fines fall after 2040. Most NYC and Boston buildings are first fined at the 2030 step.
- Retrofits usually cost less than the fines. That’s true for 86% of the buildings we could compare, and 46% of those retrofits pay for themselves on energy savings alone.
- Timing matters as much as the measures. The right start date depends on each city’s rules: the 2030 step in NYC and Boston, each building’s own targets in Denver, the cycle end in DC, and five-year deadlines in Seattle.
